Anchor sleep: the 4-hour rule that makes night shift survivable
The anchor sleep piece is the part most people miss. Pick 4 hours you can protect every single day — work days and days off — and let the rest of your sleep flex around them. Takes about two weeks before your body stops arguing. Everything else — blackout curtains, a caffeine cutoff about 8 hours before sleep — works twice as well once the anchor is set.
What ShiftSync does with this
- Builds your sleep window and anchor block from your actual shift times — not a generic template.
- Sets your caffeine cutoff 8 hours before sleep, plus blue-blocker and melatonin timing for tonight.
- Shows a 72-hour fatigue view so you can see the hard nights coming and plan around them.

Your body locks onto the part of your sleep that never moves. A longer block after a shift, a shorter one on a day off, a nap before a night on — all of that can flex. The constant full flip between a “day schedule” and a “night schedule” is what actually wrecks people.
Worked example — night shift, 7 PM to 7 AM
- Anchor: 9 AM – 1 PM. Same hours, every day, dark and quiet.
- Work days: home by 8, wind down, sleep the anchor plus a flex block (for example 3–6 PM before the shift) — or one long 9 AM–4 PM block with the anchor hours inside it staying fixed.
- Days off: keep 9 AM–1 PM asleep. Be awake for the afternoon and evening like a human; add a short early-morning block if you need more total sleep.
- Caffeine cutoff: about 1 AM — 8 hours before the anchor starts. After that, caffeine is borrowing from the anchor.
The three mistakes
1. Flipping fully on days off
Two schedules means permanent jet lag. Keep the anchor block asleep on days off too, and be awake for the afternoon and evening around it.
2. Caffeine past mid-shift
It doesn't feel like it's working at 5 AM — it shows up at 10 AM, when you're trying to sleep. ShiftSync sets the cutoff 8 hours before your planned sleep.
3. Scrolling in bed
Light plus alertness right before the anchor block delays it. A 30–60 minute wind-down — dim light, no heavy tasks — makes the sleep you get deeper.
Let the planner do this math
ShiftSync builds your anchor, caffeine cutoff, melatonin timing, and naps from your shift times in about a minute. Tonight's 3 steps are on the calculator without a card; the full week comes with the 7-day trial — card on file, cancel before day 7 ends and pay nothing.
